Common question families

Interviewers often vary the surface story while preserving the mathematical structure. Recognizing the family is more useful than remembering a single answer.

A biased coin is flipped until a target pattern occurs. Find the expected waiting time and explain how overlap changes it.
You quote a market on an uncertain quantity. New information arrives and a counterparty trades. Update fair value, spread and inventory risk.
Estimate a large real-world quantity. State assumptions, calculate an order of magnitude, and identify the assumption that matters most.

These prompts can branch into follow-ups. A strong answer therefore includes the method, assumptions and sensitivity—not only a number.

Trader, researcher and developer interviews

Quantitative trading

Trading interviews usually emphasize quick probability, expected value, market intuition, game decisions and communication under pressure. Mental arithmetic and calibration matter because the candidate must update decisions in real time.

Quantitative research

Research interviews can go deeper into statistics, stochastic processes, modeling assumptions and coding. A complete preparation plan should include implementation and data-analysis practice alongside the mathematical drills on QuantPrep.

Quant development

Developer roles often prioritize algorithms, data structures, systems knowledge and coding correctness. Quant reasoning can still appear, but it is not a substitute for a dedicated technical interview plan.

How to practice without memorizing

  1. Name the family. Before calculating, identify whether the problem is counting, conditioning, expectation, replication or strategy.
  2. State assumptions. Clarify independence, replacement, information and timing.
  3. Use the shortest valid method. Complements, symmetry and linearity often beat brute force.
  4. Explain the answer aloud. Interviews evaluate the path, not only the result.
  5. Change one condition. Ask what happens if a probability, payoff or constraint changes.

What the QuantPrep number means
