Decompose around round numbers
Round numbers reduce the working-memory burden and make error checking easier.
Use identities
Difference-of-squares and near-base calculations are especially efficient when the numbers are symmetric.
Anchor percentages
Find 10%, 5%, 1% or 25% first, then combine. The goal is a repeatable route rather than an improvised trick for every question.
A speed routine that preserves accuracy
- Work untimed until the decomposition method is automatic.
- Add a generous clock and record only accuracy.
- Tighten the clock gradually while keeping the same method.
- Separate arithmetic errors from hesitation or misreading.
- Use mixed sets only after individual skills are stable.
Speed gained through guessing is fragile. Speed gained through structure transfers to new numbers.
What to benchmark
Use your own baseline rather than one universal seconds-per-question target. Track median time, accuracy and the slowest family. A candidate who is fast on multiplication but inconsistent on fractions should not hide the weakness inside a combined average.
